monthly per kilowatt subscription fee on their bill to support the operation of their local solar facilities . For qualified low-income customers , companies like Duke Energy Carolinas will waive the application cost and initial fees .
Elsewhere , Soltage is pushing the sustainability envelope by installing solar assets on repurposed landfill sites , predominantly in Delaware and Massachusetts . “ We ’ re using land that doesn ’ t have good commercial applications ,” says Grossman . “ We ’ re able to blanket landfill in solar panels , or cover a Superfund site ( a federal government program to fund the clean-up of contaminated sites ) in a large solar asset . If front end work is done well on the engineering and design associated with those assets , they can turn into truly positive economic drivers in those areas by producing kilowatt hours .”
