Sam Clarke Head of eHGV GRIDSERVE
We are well past the phase where some people only ever use home charging, they need a mix of medium ‐power charging and high‐power charging, depending on where they are.
Q. HOW DO WE BUILD THE INFRASTRUCTURE FOR EHGVS, AND HOW DOES THAT WORK ALONGSIDE CARS?
» If anything it exacerbates the challenges we have. Trucks need to charge even faster because they are working vehicles; they need to get back on the road as soon as possible.
In terms of the infrastructure challenges, more power is needed in a more concentrated area as lots of trucks have to charge. For us, the answer would be that you need to build energy hubs. Part of all of this is not just thinking of it as asking for more grid connection, because that is too difficult. There is already about £ 100bn( US $ 133bn) of investment needed over the next five years just to reinforce the grid. Even that will not give us power where we need it in the timeframe that we need it.
