Phoenix : supporting renewable energy and products through utilities

28
“ We ’ re working with Arizona Public Service ( APS ) and Salt River Project ( SRP ),” explains City of Phoenix CSO Mark Hartman . “ SRP wants to add 1000MW of utility-scale solar over the next five years . The first 100MW they made available to their largest customers . The city will be able to purchase solar at 2.7 cents per kilowatt hour for 20 years , and then sell it on the market at prevailing rates , which today averages over 3 cents , which means a large credit on our bill . As both customers and utilities invest in projects like this , its producing clean energy while saving money .” Hartman hopes to see many more of these projects . Phoenix already boasts 32MW of solar on city land , more than any other US city , and aims to double that figure . “ We ’ re planning to add solar to parking lots , rooftops and unused land ,” he pledges . “ We ’ re also looking to lease out landfill property to utilities and renewable energy developers as a means to provide clean energy .”
