SOLAR-POWERED AI GLOBAL BIODIVERSITY MONITORING
WWF reports monitored wildlife populations have declined 73 % since 1970, with one million species at risk of extinction. To improve conservation, Microsoft developed SPARROW, an AI-driven, solar-powered biodiversity monitoring platform that uses edge computing and satellite connectivity to analyse wildlife data in real time, even in remote locations. Operating autonomously across 11 countries, SPARROW has processed more than one billion observations – including images and audio – helping researchers monitor ecosystems more efficiently while supporting broader environmental initiatives.
