The first red London bus hit the streets of the UK capital in 1905 and has since become an iconic symbol of one of the world’ s greatest cities. But this legendary vehicle is not the only notable way to get around – London is also home to the world’ s oldest underground railway system, dating back to 1863. From the horsedrawn buses that debuted in 1829 to the London Motor Omnibus Company’ s red Vanguard fleet, there is little that will stop London moving.
As London’ s transport system became more complex, Albert Stanley( later Lord Ashfield) started promoting cooperation between the different companies running the Tubes and buses, and slowly bought them up to create what was known as the Underground Group. In 1933, London Transport was born, which later became Transport for London( TfL) in 2000.
