more people can move away from private cars without sacrificing access, speed or resilience.“ The biggest opportunities for carbon savings are buses, renewable purchasing and energy efficiency,” explains Dan Curry, Senior Net Zero Lead at Transport for London.
TfL has validated science-based targets aligned with limiting warming to 1.5 degrees, covering Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. The organisation aims to cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90 % by 2030 from a 2022 baseline, and to reduce Scope 3 emissions by 45 % by 2030.
“ Transport for London is already a sustainable organisation, but there is more to do,” Dan says. Dan joined TfL in 2015 and now leads the strategy function for the organisation for operational carbon and heads up the Net Zero Matrix team, TfL’ s multidisciplinary team that is driving the changes needed for TfL’ s operations to decarbonise. One of the projects that TfL has taken forward to achieve this is the Therapia Lane tram depot retrofit.
Retrofitting a tram depot While buses and Tubes might attract more attention from tourists, TfL’ s tram network in Croydon has been active in its current form since 2000 and around 20 million journeys take place on the trams each year.
In 1998, on the site of a former railway siding, a purpose-built building was created as a hub for all tram maintenance, repair and control. Having not been refurbished since its creation,
