Fleet and energy strategy The depot retrofit sits within a wider TfL strategy that spans vehicle electrification, renewable power purchasing and efficiency improvements. Buses account for around half of the organisation’ s operational emissions, while electricity use accounts for most of the rest.
Transport for London’ s fleet already includes more than 3,000 zero-emission buses, mostly battery electric, with a small hydrogen fleet as well. It aims to reach about 6,000 zero-emission buses by the end of the current business plan period around 2030.“ Buses are already on a decarbonisation journey,” Dan says. Energy procurement is another major lever. TfL is using long-term power purchase agreements, contracts under which it buys electricity from renewable generators, to stimulate new solar and wind projects in the United Kingdom.
The organisation signed its first contract with EDF Renewables, a company that develops renewable energy infrastructure, and earlier this year added an agreement with SSE Energy Solutions, which is seeking sites across London to install solar that will directly power the Underground network. These deals help bring more renewable electricity onto the UK grid and within the London area, rather than simply buying a green tariff.
