The Croydon depot retrofit shows that principle in practice. It reduces emissions, improves conditions for staff and demonstrates how existing infrastructure can be modernised without losing operational value. This was all completed whilst the depot continued to maintain the fleet on a 24 / 7 basis.
For a transport authority of TfL’ s size, Therapia Lane was a test – and it has proved that retrofitting can benefit the environment, people and the company’ s bottom line. It is a model for how a large city network can decarbonise one building, one depot and one contract at a time.
