Google has committed to purchasing the lion’ s share of the electricity generated by the plant, where commercial operation is slated to begin in early 2030.
The project is expected to create around 750 full-time jobs over the next four years and will support dozens of permanent positions once operational.
WHAT IS THE BROADWING ENERGY FACILITY?
Broadwing is a new, gas-fired, lowcarbon power generation project in Decatur, Illinois. The first-of-itskind power plant will supply lowcarbon electricity to Google and Archer Daniels Midland and steam for processing operations by Archer Daniels Midland.
Once fully operational, more than 90 % of the carbon dioxide( CO₂) produced by the plant is expected to be captured, which will be permanently stored onsite using ADM’ s carbon capture and storage capabilities.
With the potential to permanently sequester more than two million tons of CO₂ emissions per year, this project will serve as a model for reducing carbon emissions across the globe.
