Building the framework for water stewardship Water stewardship, not carbon, is Culligan’ s environmental cornerstone. While many companies define sustainability through emission reductions, Christina sees water as the“ next frontier” of environmental strategy.
“ Many sustainability conversations start with carbon,” she says.“ At Culligan, our sustainability starts with water. It will define the next era of ESG.”
Culligan’ s products collectively avoid around 45 billion single-use plastic water bottles a year, a figure Christina wants to see reach 65 billion 2030.“ That’ s the impact of being a Culligan customer – every refill and every filtered glass helps our consumers choose a healthier and more sustainable option, and helps our broader sustainability mission” she explains.
Equally important is the company’ s long-term commitment to“ water positivity”, a term Christina uses for practices that replenish or restore water resources wherever possible. The company is developing goals around water use, water return and contaminant reduction across operations and supply chains.
A small but mighty ESG team Culligan’ s ESG ambitions are striking given the size of Christina’ s team of three, serving a global workforce of 15,000. Christina herself reports to Culligan’ s Chief Financial Officer, with two colleagues based in Europe and North America.“ It’ s definitely small but mighty,” she smiles.“ The nature of ESG is that you wear many hats. You can’ t push things off – you have to roll up your sleeves and take the lead yourself.”
That agility has proved crucial as regulatory frameworks evolve rapidly worldwide. Christina’ s team must comply with emerging legislation such as the EU’ s Corporate
