“ Research in 2023 found 210 different categories of digital twin , so it can be a complex domain to master ,” Bill says . “ Common applications are :
• Data storage and visualisation – information in a digital twin can be considered as a graph so that complex inter-relationships are easily captured and visualised
• Digital interoperability of different physical objects – where the digital twin is simply an integration mechanism where multiple consumers can view the current state of an object or system
• System prediction – which makes sense where digital twins contain rules for the inter-dependency of different components ( typically inferred from prior observation ).
• Condition-based maintenance – which could be considered a subtype of system prediction – where the digital twin provides the source data for a machine learning model which predicts when assets need to be serviced . This model can then be built into the twin to yield a system prediction .
• Simulation – where the behavioural rules of the digital twin are sufficiently realistic to enable scenarios to be tested in detail .”
