CAPTAIN ARCTIC : REDEFINING SUSTAINABLE MARINE TRAVEL WATCH NOW
Goltens hosts keel-laying ceremony for revolutionary Arctic cruise vessel
With its futuristic fins , it looks like a ship from an animated sci-fi book .
But the Captain Arctic is real – and it could be coming to an ocean not very near you .
The global marine and energy services firm Goltens recently hosted the keel-laying ceremony for the vessel , owned by French travel firm Selar .
The Captain Arctic is a 70m polar expedition cruise ship designed to operate with close to zero carbon emissions .
Its propulsion system will rely primarily on renewable energy , with 90 % of its power from wind and solar sources .
Five rigid sails integrated with 20,000 square feet of advanced solar panels form the backbone of the vessel ’ s energy system . This is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 90 % compared to conventional ships .
Christophe Chauvière , Vice President at Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore , one of the project ’ s partners , described the Captain Arctic as a “ trailblazing example of what ’ s possible in sustainable maritime design ”. sustainabilitymag . com 47
