Power generation accounts for a majority of the world’ s greenhouse gas emissions. The industry is established, efficient and profitable, and enacting change without disturbing its balance is not easy.
Renewable energy sources, including wind and solar, are often intermittent, but the world uses energy 24 / 7. Factories cannot just halt operations because the wind is not strong enough or the sky is too cloudy. A backup source is therefore needed that is not intermittent.
“ If we look at all the sectors, from aerospace to transportation to steel, power generation accounts for two thirds of emissions,” explains Javier Cavada, President and CEO for EMEA at Mitsubishi Power.
“ We are inspired by making a contribution to society, so we look at how to reduce the carbon footprint of power generation.”
Mitsubishi Power is the power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, focussed on delivering solutions in the energy sector such as turbines, boilers and training services.
In 2022, the world’ s largest sources of electricity generation were coal and natural gas according to the International Energy Agency. When coal is used to produce power, efficiency usually sits just under 40 %. Gas, however, can be much more efficient, reaching up to 60 %.
“ Compared to coal, natural gas produces one third of the emissions,” Javier explains.
