Sparkling history

Under the trademarks Coke and Coca-Cola , this carbonated beverage emerged via a shrewd and deliberately mysterious narrative involving a highly-secret list of very precise ingredients . Curiously , founder John Pemberton was motivated by a desire to ease the symptoms of drug addiction across post-civil war America . Millions were convinced and for the Coca- Cola company it proved to be liquid gold .

For many people Christmas means a huge Coca-Cola branded articulated lorry , hauling sugar infused dreams and , presumably , air pollution . Resplendent in vibrant red and white , Coke ’ s rotund Father Christmas – with bottle in hand – has become the Santa of our times .

Challenge of our rivals

The biggest threat to Coke ’ s market share was the ludicrously implausible ‘ street test ’ carried out by Pepsi . The company invited unsuspecting members of the public to taste two types of cola . The ‘ contestants ’ which appeared on television commercials , all chose Pepsi samples – the implication being that Coca- Cola was undrinkable filth . Needless to say , Coca-Cola retained its position at number one .
