At 40m high, Oceanbird’ s 200-tonne wing sail is a towering testament to a burning ambition – fossil-free shipping. The wing sail was unveiled in Landskrona, Southern Sweden, demonstrating a full rotation and accelerating the vision of rigid wing sails on the oceans. The Oceanbird company was formed three years ago as a joint venture between Alfa Laval and Wallenius Lines. The wing sail’ s core is made of high strength steel and the surface is a sandwich construction of glass fibre composites and 370,000 recycled plastic bottles. It will be used for training, customer visits and optimisation of the automation system.
