JUSTIN MURRILL
THE SUSTAINABILITY INTERVIEW

AI demand and development are increasing at an incredible rate. The technology is reshaping healthcare, scientific research, education and business, while requiring ever-greater computing capacity. As artificial intelligence models become larger and more widely deployed, sustainability is increasingly tied to the efficiency of the infrastructure that supports them.

While data centre water usage is often the first thing to mind when it comes to AI’ s climate impact, for semiconductor company AMD the challenge reaches across product design, data-centre architecture, manufacturing supply chains and end-of-life management. AMD designs central processing units, graphics processing units and related software and systems. Its technologies are used in personal computers, cloud infrastructure, high-performance computing and artificial intelligence applications.
Justin Murrill, AMD’ s Chief Sustainability Officer, leads the company’ s sustainability strategy and joined AMD about 15 years ago as its first sustainability manager.
How Justin has embedded sustainability across AMD Justin’ s career reflects the changing role of corporate sustainability. What began with operational compliance has become a strategic function connected to product engineering, procurement, legal affairs and commercial performance.
