THE SUSTAINABILITY INTERVIEW
As a result, performance per watt now matters alongside absolute performance and total cost of ownership. Total cost of ownership includes purchase, energy, maintenance, infrastructure and operational costs over the equipment’ s useful life.
AMD says enterprises could consolidate 100 older Intel Xeon Platinum 8280 dualprocessor servers into 14 servers based on AMD EPYC 9965 processors while maintaining the same total performance.
According to AMD’ s figures, that would represent an 86 % reduction in server numbers, a 69 % reduction in power use and a 41 % reduction in three-year total cost of ownership.
“ Server consolidation is key for IT organisations managing data-centre infrastructure,” Justin says. Replacing multiple older servers with fewer, more efficient systems can reduce electricity consumption and emissions, and defer the need to construct new facilities.
“ Customers can choose to maintain compute performance using much less power and physical infrastructure,” Justin explains,“ or build out to achieve substantially more compute within the same power envelope.” The benefits can extend beyond operational energy. Avoided construction can reduce land development, raw materials, manufacturing, shipping and end-of-life impacts.
AMD also points to its presence in high-performance computing. As of June 2026, AMD said its equipment powered four of the world’ s 10 fastest supercomputers and four of the 10 most energy-efficient supercomputers.
“ Some of the most exciting advances in computing can create business value for customers while helping address environmental challenges at the same time”
