Covering 136 square kilometres, the project will transform degraded grassland into a forest as large as Paris. CIP estimates it will capture over six million tonnes of carbon during its lifetime.
One challenge with these nature-based projects is that they take a long time to show results. Forests need years to grow. CIP wants to create more standard processes to help increase investment and expand the number of projects worldwide.
“ We just announced an agreement with Aviva Investors for a project that, at full scale, will have the potential to remove more than six million tonnes of carbon over its life span,” Sheri explains.“ But even six million tonnes over 40 years is not enough. So how can we standardise and replicate?
“ I’ m a huge believer in the 80-20 principle. We want 80 % as standard, with 20 % as bespoke. That’ s how you get flow; that’ s how you get credible, reliable outcomes. And that’ s the only way we can get to a billion tonnes.”
Cross-party benefits Project partners also need to commit to supporting these efforts for many years. Sheri says that having a longterm vision helps everyone involved.
“ Our project in India is called Project Aranya where Microsoft has a 30-year offtake agreement with us, and they’ ll receive 1.5 million tonnes of verified carbon removal credits over that time frame.
“ The value for the corporation is reliable access to high-quality supply.
