TAYLOR SWIFT ERAS TOUR
While the Paris Olympics is going on , musician Taylor Swift will be in the third month of her Eras Tour .
It includes 53 dates in 18 cities at some of the world ’ s largest arenas , including the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid , Wembley Stadium in London and BC Place , Toronto .
It will be watched by millions of fans , travelling many more millions of miles , consuming vast quantities of food and drink – with the inevitable packaging to take into account .
Rail Europe ( with an obvious eye on publicising its services ) has written an open letter , urging her to “ take the train ”.
It says : “ While we certainly would never dream of coming for Taylor – keyboards down , Swifties – we did want to highlight how trains , yes trains , could help make the country princess of pop even more iconic .
“ Earlier this year , Taylor ’ s romantic jet setting to the Super Bowl made fans swoon and environmentalists cringe . Why ? Air travel is , on average , 50 times more detrimental to the environment than train travel and that is for just commercial airlines .”
It adds : “ So as Taylor hits the road , err , the skies , this summer to perform in front of thousands of cheering
Swifties from Paris to Stockholm to Edinburgh and beyond , we invite her to consider , instead , to go by rail .” It breaks down the differences in emissions for travelling between each location . For example :
Paris , France to Stockholm , Sweden :
• High-speed train : 6.18kg CO2
• Plane : 290kg CO2
• Private plane : 2,900kg CO2
• Lyon , France to Edinburgh , Scotland
• High-speed train : 4.36kg CO2
• Plane : 237kg CO2
• Private plane : 2,370kg CO2
• Vienna , Austria to London , England
• High-speed train : 2.9kg CO2
• Plane : 197kg CO2
• Private plane : 1,970kg CO2
Rail Europe says : “ Taylor ’ s flights across Europe on her private planes will emit 568 times more carbon dioxide than if she were to choose to travel by train .”
