AMD says corporate responsibility has been part of its identity since its foundation in 1969. The company’ s founder, Jerry Sanders, established the motto: People first, products and profits will follow.
“ We have been publicly reporting on sustainability for over 30 years,” Justin says.“ It’ s a key reason I joined the company.”
The scale of AMD’ s operations and the reach of its technologies have changed considerably since then. Its sustainability approach has therefore evolved from site-based environmental management towards embedding responsibility across the technology lifecycle.
This includes training employees and suppliers on the company’ s code of conduct, setting energy-efficiency targets for new products and addressing impacts across operations and the value chain.
“ As our technology reaches more people, industries and applications, we have focused on deeply embedding responsible business practices across the company,” Justin explains.
The rapid expansion of AI has made that integration more urgent. AI training involves processing vast amounts of data to build a model, while inference is the use of that trained model to generate results.
Both activities require significant computing resources. Justin describes the acceleration of AI and highperformance computing as“ staggering”.
