AstraZeneca puts its global nature strategy into action through its main AZ Forest programme. The company has pledged US $ 400m to plant and care for 200 million trees on six continents by 2030. The initiative focuses on the connection between the health of the planet and people’ s well-being, supporting reforestation, watershed protection and biodiversity restoration around the world.
“ By applying a health equity lens to our science, healthcare delivery and community investment, we can better reach underserved populations worldwide. By strengthening health systems, we aim to help ensure that healthcare can be delivered effectively
– both today and for generations to come,” says Pam Cheng, CSO at AstraZeneca.
AZ Forest works closely with local NGOs, regional governments and community groups. In Indonesia, the programme teams up with small farmers in West Java to turn damaged farmland into a mix of different agroforestry systems. In Brazil, it supports the Corridors for Life project, hiring local workers to plant 11 million native trees.
AZ Forest also helps more than 28,000 small farmers in Rwanda by building soilretention terraces and uses mapping technology along with local knowledge to make sure trees survive, protect water quality and give communities steady income.
