WHERE DOES CLIMATE ACCOUNTABILITY FIT IN COMPANIES? I think the CEO is the one accountable. CEOs are responsible for the strategy, long-term future and value creation of a company, which makes sustainability part of the CEO agenda whether they like it or not. For me, it all starts with the CEO setting the example, the strategy, managing risks and embedding these into business strategy. Not just as a silo topic next to the rest, but a topic that really relates to business value creation.
This is a clear opportunity to embark the C-suite on this journey too, making sure they work together towards these goals. At the companies who really derive value from sustainability, teams work together to make every sustainability effort a company effort and, ultimately, a business value effort. It is the role of the C-suite to unlock this collaboration.
Industry-wide collaboration is also important. We see it in the industries that are the furthest ahead and doing the most interesting things.
